Rhinoplasty: What Can it Do?

Thursday, December 31st, 2009

Greetings! I hope you enjoy this informative aritcle.

Nose surgery (rhinoplasty) can be done for necessary reconstruction after an accident, to correct any negative inherited characteristics, or for cosmetic reasons, to enhance your facial appearance. The shape of the nose can be changed, its size changed, its width, profile, tip, angle between the tip and top lip, and any asymmetry corrected. Each “nose job” is customized and designed with your facial beauty in mind.Your cosmetic surgeon would first talk with you to get an understanding of what you want from the surgery. Your overall health would be evaluated, your face examined, measured and photographed, and all the options discussed. Before you have any type of surgery, it’s important to understand exactly what is being done and why, what the risks are, and what to realistically expect. Your plastic surgeon would make sure you were clear on all this.

Anesthesia would be discussed too – nose surgery can be done on an outpatient basis or in a hospital, which means either local anesthetic with a sedative, or general anesthesia. Most cosmetic surgeons have surgery privileges at a local hospital and can use that facility when necessary.

When you both decided on what should be done and a date was set, you would need to stop smoking several weeks before that date, and avoid taking aspirin and any drug or supplement which has a side effect of thinning the blood.

The procedure

A rhinoplasty can be done using an open procedure, or a closed procedure. The difference is in where the incision is made.

• An open procedure has the incision made across the front of the small partition between the nostrils (the septum).

• A closed procedure has it inside the nose.

The nasal structures can be changed by using cartilage taken from another area of the body, perhaps from the ear or ribs. Often it’s taken from the septum. If the septum is deviated, (meaning that one nostril is wider than the other, making it more difficult to breathe through the narrow side) that will be corrected during your rhinoplasty.

Nasal shape can be reduced also, by removal of cartilage or bone. When the changes are done, skin and tissue is repositioned and the incisions are sutured closed, perhaps with dissolving stitches.

Afterwards

For the first few days you may have splints to support the nose and small tubes to drain fluid. There would be some swelling and soreness for a while. Your cosmetic surgeon would have given you written self-care instructions ahead of time, and a pain prescription which you can fill before your procedure.

The recovery period varies in length depending on how much work was done. It’s a time to rest at home quietly. You can set up some comforts for yourself ahead of time, such as a supply of videos and good books, pillows and blankets, and favorite foods, especially those which need no cooking. Make arrangements for the dog to be walked, mail brought in, children cared for, and certainly arrange time off work.

Plastic surgery such as rhinoplasty is done in a partnership spirit by the best surgeons, so that you will be well-informed ahead of time and well-pleased afterwards. Follow your self-care instructions closely and go for all your follow-up visits. The full results may not become evident for a few months, but gradually you’ll see your new profile and facial beauty emerging, and you’ll be delighted at the difference.

Rhinoplasty: Women and Nose Jobs

Friday, December 25th, 2009

Greetings! I hope you enjoy this informative aritcle.

According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, more than 220,000 women had some type of rhinoplasty in 2006. (By the way, it also states that about 85,000 men had the procedure). If this is the case, then why is there still a stigma attached to women getting nose jobs?
The paparazzi gets a shot of a starlet and next thing you know, there are comparing photos to see if she’s had her “nose done.” Who cares? Just because she’s a celebrity does not mean that she is immune to the same insecurities and problems that women face everyday. Or, maybe she really did have a deviated septum like she said and needed it to clear up breathing problems. Rhinoplasty is not just about aesthetics.
It isn’t just celebrities who face scrutiny. The people in your life, the people you see everyday, these are the people having plastic surgery. Maybe you have seen co-workers speculate about someone’s new look and whisper about it in the break room. Did she or didn’t she?
Realizing the benefits of controlling personal information, there are few Hollywood stars beginning to announce their surgeries, rather than waiting to be outed by the media.
If you are considering re-shaping your nose, admit it with pride. Maybe afterward, once everyone notices your new self-confidence and how good you feel about yourself, they will see the true benefits. Seek support from your friends and family for more positive reinforcement.
Many women consider their self confidence before and after their nose job, and most will agree that after surgery, life changed. With a new nose, they project much more self-assurance because they feel so much more beautiful. This is good illustration of the kind of impact rhinoplasty can have on life in general.
Yes, your physical appearance changes for a more balanced, symmetrical look, but your self-esteem will get a big boost as well, which will show in your everyday interactions.
It takes a lot of courage to undergo this kind of procedure. It is a surgical process with risks and the recovery can be unpleasant with swelling and bruising. But, if there is something about your nose that is preventing you from living a fulfilled and confident life, then it is something to consider.
Choosing your Rhinoplasty Specialist:
Many doctors in various fields are incorporating plastic surgery into their everyday practice: gynecologists, dermatologists and general practitioners.
For Rhinoplasty, many find their ENT (ear, nose and throat) specialist encouraging a nose reshaping along with a deviated septum correction.
As with any cosmetic surgery, you should research your surgeon thoroughly. You should only look for a plastic surgeon, board certified by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons.
The ASPS is the largest plastic surgery specialty organization in the world, and is the most authoritative by requiring their certified surgeons to have more than six years of surgical training and a minimum of three years in plastic surgery. The training and experience required of them make them immensely qualified to perform cosmetic or reconstructive procedures.

Rhinoplasty: More and More Men are Getting Nose Jobs

Thursday, December 24th, 2009

Greetings! I hope you enjoy this informative aritcle.

Guys don’t get nose jobs … do they? Oh, yes, they do. In fact, male rhinoplasty is one of the most popular cosmetic surgery procedures for men these days and for a variety of reasons.
Men face the same societal images that women do every day. They see the chiseled jaws, full lips and strong noses of male celebrities and models on the covers of their favorite magazines and in the movies. As a result, more and more men seek the services of plastic surgeons and skin specialists to mend the little imperfections of their face.
The nose is the most prominent feature of the face and men tend to want a stronger more masculine look that projects power and confidence. They are different from women in this respect because women tend to desire a more petite more feminine look.
But, like women, a tiny change in facial features can give a man self-confidence that can improve all aspects of his personal and professional life. Whatever changes are made, the key is sculpting the shape to fit the face.
Too many fistfights or baseballs to the face during your childhood may have left you crooked or lumpy looking. The crooked broken look may have been a badge of honor or added to a tough guy persona, but the growing acceptance of cosmetic changes for men has changed public perception.
Today’s man is much more concerned about his appearance and the visual impression he makes in the work force and on the dating scene. Crooked and bumpy is not the kind of look that goes with a suit and tie.
Aesthetics are not the only reason for male rhinoplasty. Breathing problems as a result of an obstruction or a malformation of the nose are corrected through surgery as well. Of course, this sometimes helps the appearance, but the improved breathing is the real improvement.
A deviated septum is a common problem that complicates breathing. The septum is the wall of cartilage and bone separating the nostrils. Other problems include thickened lining or septum, malformations and enlarged nasal structures.
So, exactly what changes can be made through rhinoplasty? Your surgeon can make the nose smaller in width and length. The tip can be sculpted or lifted and the nostrils can be reshaped if they are too big or small. Bumps and crooks can also be fixed to improve the line and give a straighter profile.
As with any surgery, thoroughly research your plastic surgeon. Does he have experience in performing male rhinoplasty? Chances are good he will since the number of men seeking this procedure grows every year- as much as 20% from 2005 and 2006, according to the American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery. Look at before and after pictures of other men who have had the surgery, and tell your doctor in clear terms what you want.
If you thought there was no hope and that cosmetic surgery was just for women, think again. Look into it and see if male rhinoplasty is right for you. It just might change your life.

Rhinoplasty Gives You the Nose You Want

Friday, December 11th, 2009

Greetings! I hope you enjoy this informative aritcle.

Rhinoplasty is known more commonly as a “nose job.” It involves hiring a qualified and experienced plastic surgeon to reconstruct your nose the way you want it.
Why would anybody want the procedure done? There are as many reasons as there are patients for the surgery. Maybe you feel your nose is too small, or too big, and you’d like it to be closer to average size, or it could be misshapen. You might want to make your nostrils smaller, or change the dimensions of the bridge or tip of your nose. More importantly, you might suffer from a birth defect or injury, and the procedure would help you breath easier.
Clearly, there are a variety of good reasons for rhinoplasty. The operation is becoming much more common, but like any plastic surgery procedure, it’s not one to take lightly. You should always consult with your doctor about your needs, your plans and the work you want done.
It’s All About Improvement
Rhinoplasty will improve your looks, but not change them entirely. Taking a little off here, expanding there, reducing that and narrowing this won’t give you a totally new face. Rhinoplasty is just for the nose, and the best results are those that make little improvements rather than complete overhauls.
Before you start dreaming of what your new face will look like, take a look at some before and after photos of other patients. Your plastic surgeon will have some for you to see, and you can also see pictures online. Looking at these, you’ll get a good idea of what kinds of changes can be made. Then, you can decide if the operation will get you where you want to go.
Checking It Out
When you’re thinking of what you’d like to have done, or not have done, take a look at the results for some celebrities (they’ll be the easiest to find). There are countless examples of celebrities, both male and female, improving their looks buy adjusting their noses. There are also some examples you can use to show your doctor what you don’t want. A bad example can be as informative as a good example.
The best procedures usually involve de-emphasizing the nose so that other parts of the face, like eyes or lips, can become more noticeable. This is something to think about. Your nose is often the first thing people notice, and it could be keeping them from noticing other attractive features of your face. Celebrities offer great examples of what can be done (and what shouldn’t be done) with rhinoplasty.
Know Your Own Needs
The better an idea you have of what you want, the easier it will be for your surgeon to produce the desired results. The single most important factor in the success or failure of your rhinoplasty is knowing exactly what you want. If you can tell your doctor what you want, he or she can decide how to best achieve it.
For those who find themselves looking in the mirror, pressing their noses this way and that, and dreaming of a little nasal improvement, rhinoplasty is a wonderful opportunity. As long as you have realistic expectations and a good idea of what you want, your operation can be a success. Talk to your plastic surgeon about what you have in mind.

Rhinoplasty For Men – How A Nose Job Can Get You The Perfect Balance

Tuesday, December 1st, 2009

Greetings! I hope you enjoy this informative aritcle.

Nose jobs are not just for women. Many men find that a rhinoplasty operation can improve their facial appearance dramatically, and plastic surgeons are learning more about how to make men look they way they want to. Rhinoplasty for men is a growing trend, and it looks like it will continue growing in the future.
How is rhinoplasty different for men?
There is little difference in the actual procedure itself. The main difference lies in the fact that what looks good for a man and what looks good for a woman are different.
The average angle between a person’s nose is 90 to 120 degrees, but this too differs between the sexes. Women generally look better with a larger angle, while men usually prefer a smaller one. This is true also of the angle between the nose and the forehead. Men have more pronounced brows, and this has to be taken into consideration as well.
The most important thing for a person’s nose, no matter whether they are male or female, is to be in harmony with the rest of their face. This balance is the key.
Many men find themselves getting a nose job less for nose shaping than to downplay undesirable features of their nose. Some don’t like their noses because they are just too big. This is a pretty common problem. A big nose, aside from just being unattractive, draws away from your face’s other features. It tends to dominate the face, so that people looking at you don’t see other features like your eyes, cheekbones or mouth.
The most common reason for rhinoplasty in men is to reduce the size of the nose, although that is not the only thing that a nose job can achieve.
Lots of guys go to the plastic surgeon for other nose alterations than reducing the size …
For example, your nose may droop. A drooping nose can really hurt your profile, as well as give your face an over-all droopy appearance.
Another nose tip problem is what has often been referred to as the “ski jump” nose. This is a nose that points upward at the tip, generally considered an undesirable facial feature. Rhinoplasty can correct both of these conditions, while keeping the length and overall shape of your nose the same.
Many are unhappy with the bump in their nose. In the plastic surgery industry, this is called a “dorsal hump.” A dorsal hump is particularly noticeable in profile, and it is a facial feature most feel they could do without.
Rhinoplasty is often employed to help out those who have trouble breathing because of the shape of their nose. This can be caused by a deformity in the shape of the nose, and rhinoplasty can take care of it.
Men often go to a plastic surgeon to fix a broken nose that never got back into shape just right. The truth is that one accident that knocks your nose out of place can leave its imprint for a lifetime. This is one of the areas where rhinoplasty for men is most successful.

Rhinoplasty and Chin Augmentation Combination Surgery Considerations

Monday, November 30th, 2009

Greetings! I hope you enjoy this informative aritcle.

As you may already know, rhinoplasty is a plastic surgery procedure which is used to correct malformations of the nose, often for deviated septum or a broken nose not healing correctly.
However, you may not be aware that many patients who undergo rhinoplasty procedures can also greatly benefit from a chin augmentation. And, the best news is that these two procedures can be combined and performed all on the same day by your plastic surgeon.
What is Rhinoplasty?
Rhinoplasty is major surgery which corrects malformations of the nose to help improve the facial appearance of the patient and improve breathing function. This and breast augmentation are two of the most popular cosmetic surgery procedures performed in the United States today.
Also, more commonly referred to as a “nose job,” this procedure is performed by plastic surgeons across the U.S. in response to the increasing demand from men and women.
What is Chin Augmentation?
Chin augmentation surgery consists of an implant being placed to help correct underdevelopment of the natural jawline. The implant is used to help create a more prominent chin in those born with a weaker jawline.
Why Are These Combined?
Often patients needing rhinoplasty also have small chins. Or the new nose makes an average chin appear smaller in proportion. And a small chin makes the nose appear larger than it really is.
However, when a nose job is performed it only fixes the issues of the nose structure and not the issues associated with the weak chin. By combining the two procedures, your plastic surgeon can fix your nose and use an implant on the jawline to help balance out the look of your face.
Generally, patients who undergo both procedures are happier with their overall post-surgical results than those who choose one procedure over the other.
How are the Procedures Performed?
Both can be performed on an out-patient basis. You will be given general anesthesia and can plan on being in surgery for a little more than two hours.
Generally, the chin implant will be done first before the rhinoplasty. A small incision is made on the jawline and the implant is installed by securing it with small titanium screws into the jaw bone.
The rhinoplasty is started by making an incision in the columella tissue of the nose. The columella tissue is located between the nostrils. The bump on the nose is then removed by using a hand rasp or power rasp, depending on the severity of the deformity.
Following this, the nasal bones are broken and repositioned into their proper place. Once completed, the nose it placed in a cast.
The Recovery
You can expect at least five days of healing. At this point, the casting will be removed and the nose will completely heal over time.
If you are considering having rhinoplasty, chin augmentation, or a combination of both procedures, it is advisable that you contact a Board Certified plastic surgeon in your area to schedule a consultation with. The plastic surgeon can then answer all of your questions and concerns.
